Renting a dumpster isn’t something that most people need to do all that often. Perhaps you’ve never needed to rent one before, or considered it. You start doing some searching and holy cow are there a lot of choices. Where do you start? We’ve compiled some helpful information to make sure you choose wisely for your specific needs.

#1 Shop Local

First thing to check for is to make sure you’re dealing with a local company that actually owns its own dumpsters. Many companies such as Budget Dumpster, Local Dumpster Rental, Heartland Recycling Services and some others are just middlemen that will ultimately increase your overall cost. Their business model is to take your phone call, help you reserve a dumpster, and then call a local company and mark the price up by a certain amount. When renting a dumpster, it’s always more cost effective to shop with a local company that services its own containers. Also, local companies tend to provide better customer service. If you have a problem, you’re dealing directly with the company providing the service, not a remote call center.

# 2 Find out what is included and what isn’t

Many companies have a lot of hidden fees that you need to be aware of. Often times the price to get your dumpster delivered is just the starting point. There are many companies that charge a delivery fee, pick up fee, rental fee, disposal fees and those will often be marked up substantially over the standard rate. Make sure you ask about these things before booking your dumpster rental. There are some companies that charge only a flat rate and as long as you don’t load the container really heavy, or put prohibited items in your dumpster, you’ll always know what your cost will be.

#3 Decide how long you’ll need your dumpster

Locally owned dumpster companies tend to provide the best overall price for your rental. Companies that specialize in residential dumpster rental and light commercial, such as White Glove, tend to do shorter term rentals. If you’re needing a container for a long time (several weeks or more) large national chains are more likely to have these options available.

#4 Find out if driveway protection is included in the price

If you have a concrete driveway, you probably want to keep it looking nice. Dumpsters have metal wheels that have the potential to scratch your driveway. The two options are to either put the dumpster in the street (which isn’t always practical or a good idea) or choose a company that offers driveway protection included in the price.

You’re ready to tackle that garage clean-out or remodeling project you’ve put off. You’ve scheduled your dumpster rental and are ready to get started. Is there anything to take care of first? The process is simple. Let White Glove know where you’d like your dumpster placed, and make sure there are no obstructions in the way. Some clients like to place cones or flags to show exactly where they would like their dumpster placed if no one will be home. Our dumpsters take up the space of a full-sized SUV, so you can take care of your project without giving up your entire driveway.

Christmas Is Coming, Are You Ready?

I love Christmas!  I’m that person watching Elf, listening to classic Christmas music, and decorating as soon as I can…often all at the same time.  Did I mention I love Christmas?  Decorating  inside and outside of my house is the best way to spend a day.  Santas, elves, minions, minions dressed like Santa, minions dressed like elves cause everyone to smile.  Christmas is just a happy time of year.  Except……all of those minions tend to clutter up my house.  I quickly realized I needed to add a step to my Christmas decorating.  Decluttering.

I was getting a little stressed as the Christmas decorations mixed with our everyday things, which resulted in a lot of clutter.  I kept adding to the clutter with each box of decorations I brought out.  The clutter was making decorating almost impossible.  I finally realized I had to declutter and organize before I could really enjoy decorating for Christmas.  I scheduled my own driveway dumpster and started cleaning house.  Decluttering first seriously made putting up those Santas and Minions even more fun…didn’t think Christmas Minions could get more fun.  I came across a great article  and this vlog with great ideas and tips on getting started with Christmas decluttering.  Happy Decorating!

Decluttering for Your Health, A Few Tips I Learned

By | Blog

Ever feel like it’s a constant losing battle to tidy up? You give up an entire Saturday getting everything in order, it looks so good you want to scrapbook your accomplishment!  Sadly and much to your  confusion, within a few weeks it’s all back to the way it was before.  All your hard work and lost Saturday was for nothing, there’s even a few new items added to the clutter.

We went through this more times than I care to admit, then I found the book The Life Changing Art of Tidying Up.    For once, and hopefully for good, our space has stayed tidy for a long time now.  Here’s a few quick, easy tips we learned on how to declutter for good.

I like to start in the garage since, for us at least, we spend much of our time there.  You really only need three things to make the process quick and easy. You’ll need a few tarps or old blankets, a dumpster, and some storage containers. Start in one area of the garage and go through everything quickly, don’t overthink each item.  Everything goes to one of three places-on the donate tarp, storing tarp, or in the dumpster (my personal favorite).  I know this sounds drastic, but after going through every area of the garage and house, I’ve found there’s so many things I have duplicates of or hardly use at all.  I’m not even sure where some of it came from!

Once you’ve completed the process of sorting, only put back the things you truly love and actually use . Try to keep similar items together in well marked storage containers or on shelves. We have found a number of great organizations in Wichita to donate our items.  Passageways for household items still in good condition. The United Methodist Open Door  also accepts household items that are still in good condition. If you have chemicals, old paint cans, or spray cans The Sedgwick County Hazardous Waste Facility will accept these items for free. Everything else can quickly and easily go inside the dumpster.  It’s all really that easy.

Now is the time to start! The kid’s are almost out of school and can help, and renting a dumpster is easy.    Getting started is the hardest part, but once you do, it’s easy to keep going. When you’re finished the sense of relief you’ll feel is amazing!
